Anne Power – General Election Candidate for Wyre and Preston North 2015

8 April 2015

Green Party veteran and a 2014 Observer Ethical Awards winner, Anne Power is standing for Wyre & Preston North:

“Raised on a Liverpool housing estate, I became a teacher in 1953 and later a teacher-trainer in London before re-training as a counsellor aged 46. My work brought me in contact with people on very low incomes and few benefits and I found myself increasingly angry about this injustice. I joined the Green Party, then known as the Ecology Party, largely because of the social devastation caused by Mrs. Thatcher.”

“Whether in Liverpool, London, Lancaster or Brighton, I have worked ceaselessly for the Greens, by phone, email or on foot. I attend most conferences and value greatly our party’s inclusive democratic ethic. I joined hundreds of others in the big anti Iraq war march in London and saw the deterioration of the Labour Party under Tony Blair's influence when the seeds of the current destruction of the welfare state were sown.”

“A huge change in my life occurred in November 2013 when I went to the anti-fracking camp in Barton Moss. I have not stopped since, marching slowly in front of lorries, being hassled by police, and supporting people arrested so unjustly in court afterwards. The camp members nominated me for Local Hero in the Observer Ethical Awards, which I went on to win in June 2014.”

“I have watched as our rights, which have been hard won all my lifetime and before, are now being dismantled before my eyes. All the accumulated wisdom, justice and freedoms that we hold dear are being systematically erased. We are being returned to a Victorian society of a few very rich owners and dis-empowered subordinates. I want the opportunity to challenge these things as best I can, and fight for the common good.”
