Green Councillors take action on cycling safety

16 December 2016

Green Councillors have taken safety measures into their own hands and have put up  posters on the city side approach to the Millennium bridge warning that in frosty and icy weather this  area is very slippery for cyclists and pedestrians

County Councillor Gina Dowding said

“We know that at least two people have skidded here and come off their bikes.  One man suffered some serious injuries.  We immediately  contacted both City and County Councils asking for some action. City council officers say they grit the wider area only when they expect there to be a period of at least 3 days sub-zero temperatures based on information they  get from County highways. They also told us that they do treat  the Millennium Bridge more frequently when it gets frosty together with the immediate approaches.

" But the approach to the bridge from the city centre -  under the railway bridge - involves turning a tight circle to the right creating a high risk of coming off a bike if the path is  slippery. Grit or no grit cycling on icy days in this area  is very hazardous. Where there’s not enough volume of passing people  to grind the grit into the surface it doesn’t work as well so there will always be icy patches on icy days”

“We have now asked the County Council to put up proper warning signs but as interim measure I hope that these posters will help keep reduce the risk of falls. In the longer term we need to look at whether a safer surface could be laid in this area.”
