Greens condemn lack of action on the environment, 25th January 2017.

25 January 2017

Green councillors say that the Labour-run City Council has abandoned key plans to promote the environment. In particular, the Greens say that the release of Labour's proposed budget shows that:

No money has been allocated for a feasibility study on the proposed Council-run solar farm at Middleton Wood.

Plans to introduce charging points for electric vehicles in the city centre have not taken place.

Green group leader Jon Barry said: "I am upset that Labour seems to be back-tracking on its environmental commitments. When Green Party councillors were on the cabinet, we pushed forward a scheme for solar panels on council buildings - which nets the council and the taxpayer around £50,000 per year. A bigger project at Middleton Wood could yield much more. Private solar farms seem to be viable, so I don't understand why the council's one wouldn't be."

"I'm also very concerned that neither the city nor the county councils are promoting electric vehicles. We know that pollution levels in the city centre exceed health-safety levels - and making it easy for people to use electric vehicles would be a small step towards addressing our serious air quality problem".
