Hamish Mills - Lancaster City Councillor for Bowerham Ward, Young Greens Co-ordinator

Hamish was born and raised in Lancaster, went to Bowerham Primary School, and has been active in the local green party since a young child. He studied Outdoor Adventure at Kendal College, he is now studying Forestry Management at the University of Cumbria.

Hamish has been active in the Bowerham community for years, by organising litter picks and other community events and is involved in local community groups such Friends of Dorrington Woods and Play Park. He regularly walks around the ward to check on road conditions, litter and many other things and keeps an eye on planning applications, notifying residents and commenting when necessary.

He is the former chair of Lancaster Youth For the Environment (LYFE), bringing young people together to discuss solutions to the climate emergency and get their voices heard. He organised local youth climate strikes, demanding system change to combat the Climate Emergency, and assisted with the campaign for the City Council to declare a climate emergency, which passed in January 2019.

Hamish was elected to Lancaster City Council to represent Bowerham Ward in 2023, and is a member of the North Lancashire Green Party Executive Committee in the role of local Young Greens Co-ordinator.

Hamish says:
“I enjoy my increasing involvement in community projects and local politics, working with people to improve where I live and the area I grew up in. I relish the opportunity to further this on the city council, work alongside green councillors to improve the district as a whole. I believe as a young person who grew up in the area, I can bring to light the issues of long term residents and young people in the city and work for both to make the city a better place.”
