Around 50 Green party members from across the the north west were among the 500 people who turned out at the National anti-fracking rally last Saturday at the Preston New Road -site being prepared by Cuadrilla for shale gas extraction.
County Councillor Gina Dowding who spoke at the rally said:
"We need urgent action against climate change and the last thing to make that happen is a new fossil fuel industry like shale gas. The Greens have a vision for a low carbon economy, and policies on housing, energy and transport that could start to make that happen immediately. A low-carbon economy will benefit the vast majority of people, whereas fracking for shale gas will destroy existing jobs in agriculture and tourism and endanger our health through the associated high risks of water contamination and air pollution .”
Gina added: ‘The focus of the shale gas industry at the moment is on one site near Blackpool- but for it to be commercially viable it will need to drill hundreds of wells. The government has issued licenses for future drilling across large swathes of the country - including vast areas in Lancashire and some parts of the Lancaster and Morecambe district.”
