Council axes funding for Marsh Community Centre

16 March 2017

Marsh Community Centre is set to lose funding from Lancaster City Council.

Cllr Jon Barry, Chair of the Marsh Community Centre said:

"The City Council has historically given support for the Marsh and Ridge Community Centres since the end of the Single Regeneration Budget grant in the early 2000s. Last year, the Marsh money was transferred to the Housing budget, but this year the Labour administration has decided not to pay the £13,000 grant and it is to discontinue the Ridge funding next year."

"This is a very short-sighted decision and is nothing to do with lack of money. The Labour group has put away £500,000 to spend on very vague projects such as 'promoting the district'. There is plenty of money to spend on a vitally important project at the Marsh that requires very little funding and makes an enormous impact."

"If this money is cut then the centre will not close, but it will not be able to run youth groups such as for 4-7 year olds, 8-11 and 12+ years. Only this year, the Marsh won The Guardian National awards as one of the best four community centres in the country - and yet it is being cut by a Labour administration with plenty of spare money."
