Greens demand urgent action on City Centre trees

2 August 2018

Green councillors asked the Council to take immediate action l after a fresh round of vandalism left a number of city centre trees in a desperate state.

Cllr Dave Brookes asked for temporary barriers to be placed around trees to prevent further damage, and for CCTV footage to be examined., which were subsequently installed

Cllr Dave Brookes said:

“It is a criminal offence to damage trees in a Conservation Area. Some of the trees have had a lot of bark removed, which could severely weaken or even kill them.

The recent heatwave demonstrated how valuable city centre trees are for providing shade. It is difficult to understand why anyone would attack trees, but this level of damage cannot be accidental.”
