THIS IS A CLIMATE EMERGENCY
Last week at the City Council meeting, Green councillors co-proposed a motion for the City Council to declare a ‘climate emergency’. Supported by petitions and expert speakers, the motion called on the Council to take urgent action to eliminate its contribution to climate change by 2030.
A rally was held outside Morecambe Town Hall before the meeting to demonstrate to councillors the strength of public support on this issue.
The 2018-2022 Council Plan had not one single mention of climate change until Greens put pressure on the Labour cabinet to include it last summer. Labour then made a commitment to make the Council ‘zero carbon’, but only by 2050, twenty years too late according to the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
In December, Greens proposed a motion to require better energy efficiency standards for new homes in the district, especially those built on Council-owned land. However almost all Labour councillors voted not to make new-build homes warmer and cheaper to run!
