Izzy Metcalf-Riener - Green Candidate in the Castle By-Election

14 February 2024

We are delighted to announce Izzy Metcalf-Riener as the Green Party candidate in the upcoming Castle ward by-election on Thursday 14th March.

One of Castle ward's three Green councillors, Shelagh McGregor, has had to move away to care for family. Izzy hopes to join Green Councillors Paul Stubbins and Dave Brookes and continue their track record of year-round hard work for residents as part of a strong Castle ward Green team.

Izzy lives in Castle ward and wants to help the area, city and community continue to thrive. She is interested in creating more small-scale green spaces, such as 'pocket parks', in the town centre to increase biodiversity, and in measures to reduce traffic and air pollution and make walking, cycling and public transport easier and more accessible for everyone. Izzy is committed to bringing a fresh and inclusive approach to the table, ensuring that everyone's voices are heard and valued.

Izzy has lived in Lancaster for over 4 years. She graduated from a Geography and Spanish degree last summer, and is currently studying for a master's in Environment, Culture and Society.

She is already heavily involved in the local Green Party as a member of the executive and co-ordinates the Lancaster Young Greens Society running weekly events to encourage students and young people to engage in politics. Nationally, she sits on the Young Green Students Committee, which campaigns on student issues and supports Green Party student groups across the country.

Izzy is passionate about environmental and social justice and has volunteered at the Women’s Environmental Network as an events and social media assistant. She is interested in policy-making, embedding greater participation into urban planning and local government, and implementing a Just Transition at all scales.
