Warton Group 'Friends of the Roods' makes amazing progress - planting flowers and raising funds

28 February 2024

Cllr Sue Tyldesley helped establish a ‘Friends of the Roods’ Group in 2023 to help transform a little-used piece of Council land in Warton into a beautiful wildflower haven, including Autumn Hawkbit, Field Scabious, Cowslip and Ox eye daisy.

With the support of Lancaster City Council, and with plants donated by Arnside ANOB, the group held two wildflower and bulb planting days in the autumn with the help of two school classes from Warton Archbishop of Hutton Primary School.

They have also fundraised for a new fence, which has now been erected to make the site more secure.

Cllr Sue said:

“This new community group is absolutely committed to improving their local green space, and they have done wonders in such a short space of time. The Group is working on improving access, and there will be local consultation on options for the future design of a play area. Once a preferred scheme has been chosen, more fundraising will be needed."

Fundraisers to date have included coffee mornings and a sponsored walk up Ingleborough by some of the local children.
A hedge-planting event planned for December had to be postponed due to frozen ground.

On 9th March 1-3pm, at The Roods, the hedge planting will go ahead, and discussion on proposals for the site.
