Quick action by Cllr Sally Maddocks on flood alert in Glasson

18 April 2024

Whilst there is on-going dispute between the Environment Agency and Lancaster Port commission as to who is responsible for the cost of the broken sea gate, last week’s spring tides were far higher than predicted and caused even more concern for local residents and boat owners in Glasson. Strong north-westerly winds coinciding with the spring tide created a big surge. Green City Councillor for Ellel, Sally Maddocks, who lives in Glasson village, on seeing just how high the water level was, immediately contacted the Environment agency and the Canal and River Trust.

In response, Lancashire County Highways temporarily closed the road for the next tide, and put up temporary flood warning signs.

Sally said:

“It is so important that all public bodies work together. As a local councillor I feel that it is important to have someone on the ground to keep on top of who is responsible for which part of protecting the public and their properties from flooding. I have reported to Lancashire County Council the missing ’road liable to flooding’ warning signs which they will now replace.

Unfortunately, as some locals witnessed with horror - this was too late to stop some cars and the bus to Knott End from driving through deep water.”
