52 Mondays rule of Universal Credit leaves many people desperate

20 March 2024

Due to a motion proposed by Deputy Leader of the Council, Green Councillor Caroline Jackson, Lancaster City Council is to write to the Secretary of State for the DWP to request that Universal Credit Housing Allowance always be provided for every week of the payment year. A debate on a ‘53 Mondays’ motion at its March Full Council meetting highlighted anomalies in the current welfare system, which is based on 52 Mondays in a year and means that every 5-6 years, when there is a year with an extra Monday, people who pay their rent weekly have to pay an extra week’s rent that has accumulated – which is not covered by Universal Credit.
