At our General Election Campaign launch event on Friday, MP Caroline Lucas - who has served as the Green Party’s sole member of parliament since 2010 - spoke about her acheivements, and why we need Green MPs, and introduced our Candidates: Jack Lenox for Lancaster and Wyre and Gina Dowding for Morecambe and Lunesdale.

Central Government has given Lancaster City Council a grant of £764,916, - about half the money the council spent clearing up the aftermath of the Supaskips Fire that blazed for over three weeks in December. The City Council continues to work towards securing further recovery of the financial outlay; to finding answers to residents' understandable questions around how this could have happened at all; and looking at taking steps to take public ownership of the site.
Weed spray opt-out trial gets the go ahead

Several Lancaster streets - Brook Street, Cromwell Road, Anderson Close, Chapel Street and part of Willow Lane -will be taking part in a trial to stop being treated with weed spray, spearheaded by Green City Councillors and residents who are concerned about the effects of glyphosate on humans and the environment. During the year long trial, Lancashire County Council, who manage highways, has agreed to support a request to opt out from glyphosate spraying, and weeds will be managed manually by residents.
South Lancaster residents await planning appeal decision on canal-side new homes

Last week, Green Cllr Tim Hamilton-Cox represented local residents’ concerns at a planning appeal hearing. The planning inspector was hearing the developer’s appeal against the planning committee’s unanimous refusal in June 2023 of an application to build up to 70 homes at the ‘Canal Bank stables’ site. The proposed development is on the east side of Lancaster Canal, north of Deep Cutting. Many residents had made submissions which expressed their dismay at the impact on the landscape and this had formed the first reason for refusal. The planning committee had identified highways’ impact as a second reason for refusal. A number of residents - including former Scotforth West councillor Tim Dant - commented at the appeal on both the impact on local landscape and nature, and the traffic impacts of the proposal, which Cllr Time Hamilton focused on in his contribution.
Quick action by Cllr Sally Maddocks on flood alert in Glasson

Last week’s spring tides were far higher than predicted, concerning local residents and boat owners in Glasson. Councillor Sally Maddocks, who represents Ellel, lives in Glasson village, and seeing the high water level, immediately contacted the Environment agency and the Canal and River Trust; and also reported to Lancashire County Council missing ’road liable to flooding’ warning signs. In response, Lancashire County Highways temporarily closed the road for the next tide, and put up temporary flood warning signs.
Councillor Caroline Jackson to speak at this Saturday's Lancaster March for Palestine

Lancaster March for Palestine will tale place at 1.00pm on Saturday 20th April. The march will start at the Market Square, and conclude with a rally in Dalton Square, part of growing global protests about the violence, hunger, and inability to meet other basic human needs in Gaza. The North Lancashire Green Party is a sponsor of the march, and Green councillor Caroline Jackson, deputy leader of Lancaster City Council will speak.
Emily Heath - Green Candidate for Carnforth & Millhead in May 2nd By-Election

Emily Heath is the Green Party candidate in the Lancaster City Council by-election in Carnforth & Millhead on Thursday 2 May. Emily is an experienced Councillor who served on the Council for 12 years. after being one of the first Greens elected to Lancaster City Council in 1999. She is also a successful community campaigner - including campaigning to protect Freeman’s Wood in Lancaster from development and fundraising for a local charity (of which she is a trustee) to buy the land and manage it for the benefit of local people and wildlife.

Successful Skate Park Clean Up & Consultation on 13th April

Following the establishment of the 'Friends of the Skate Park' group, a large crowd of people attended a Litter Pick and Clean Up day last month at Lancaster Skate Park at Green Ayre. The next phase of the group's plan is to hold a consultation day on the 13th of April from 12pm, with fun activities, music and a chance to have a say in the development of the park.
