Suhir Abuhajar - Lancaster City Councillor for John O'Gaunt Ward

Dr Suhir Abuhajar has lived in Lancaster for nearly 20 years and has a PhD in Biomedical Physics from Lancaster University.

Among her various charitable projects, Suhir established a community school, dear to her heart, named after her deceased daughter Naba. Naba Arabic school for learning and community work (NAS) is a social enterprise organisation focusing on targeted education and upskilling programmes for children aged 5-18.

NAS delivers various social and educational activities in Lancaster and neighbouring areas but focuses particularly on Arab community members to assist their integration into the local community and assert their culture and values.

Among its various programmes, Naba runs an inspiring and empowering program for young women aged 11-18. In addition, Naba provides classes teaching Arabic as a second language to adults and children. Most recently, Naba Arabic School started a story and song program for preschool children at Lancaster Library.

For the wider community, NAS organises and delivers a lot of activities involving families of all ages, as well as a monthly community gathering which is open to all families in Lancaster. At every Eid celebration, NAS organises a big Eid Party attended by all people from all communities. This has become an annual event.

During the month of Ramadan, Naba catered for around 100 refugees and asylum seekers daily. These meals were open to anyone, both Muslims and non-Muslims.

In addition to managing all her school’s activities, Suhir is a Vice Chair of the Communities Together group in Lancaster City Council and one of the founders and trustees of Ansaar group, a charity founded to present all Muslim organisations in Lancaster.

Dr Suhir Abuhajar was elected to Lancaster City Council representing John O’Gaun  in 2023, and aims to help residents by working hard for them and addressing their concerns and issues.
